Rainwater management is not a new phenomenon. For example, rainwater harvesting has been practised in several Middle Eastern countries, as well as in many other arid and semiarid regions of China, India, Pakistan and several other countries for some 3,000 years. For a long time, rainwater harvesting received little or no attention from decision-makers and water professionals in most parts of the world. Yet, the practice has continued, and even accelerated, in numerous developing countries, primarily in the rural areas.
