Management of Traditional Resource Systems in Marginal Areas

In their paper on ‘The International Potential of Traditional Resource Systems in Marginal Areas,’ Ruddle and Grandstaff (1978) point out that development is ‘problematical’ for marginal areas of the world. They have suggested that ‘transformational’ development may be most appropriate for these areas. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to elaborate and supplement the ideas and approaches put forward by Ruddle and Grandstaff.

While marginal areas occur all over the world, unless otherwise mentioned, the discussions herein refer to the marginal areas of ‘developing’ countries.
